Have you guys read the book "where's my jetpack" by... the name escapes me. At any rate, it's about technology thought up by sci-fi media and the possibility of it being created and used today. Looks like a good read.

I read quite a bit of scifi. I'm always struck by two things whenever I imagine a giant tether in the sky:

1) Please don't get stuck at 65,000 feet with me on it

2) An interesting problem will be keeping flying things like airplanes and orbital debris away from it.

Oh, and Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry is seriously awesome.
