About what we should be getting in the "next" space program's capsules:

a) smaller (like computers nowadays)
b) easier to re-configure (like software nowadays)
c) cheaper (think of how many C-64s, Apple IIs and TRS-80s have sold)
d) able to operate by a wider crowd of people. (like computers nowadays)
e) expandable with a wide array of peripherals.

You know, an interesting question would be whether or not the advances in technology have dragged us down creatively in some ways.

Think about the original three star wars movies. They were brilliant! They had a rustic, realistic feel that is believable by even today's standards. The emphasis was on the characters, acting, plot and dialogue. They worked hard and creatively to make their stuff look real- even the puppets.

Then you look at the prequel. Lucas and all were so focused on what they could do with the computers and effects, the important things were sadly lacking.

The results of both efforts is that Lucas created three movies, with plots, characters and dialogue. But the original three were better because they focused on the important things. The prequel sucked because there was too much "shiny" to distract it's creators. (not to mention, too many creators)

Same thing happening here. There are too many people who have a say when the government runs a space program. And there are too many options, too much technology. Too much "shiny". They need to lean down and struggle through to make a more quality product.
