Maybe the question should be: why have a manned space program at all? I've thought about it and thus far I can't find a good reason to fund the Space Station. I know the Space Shuttle is a lousy design, wasteful, unsafe, downright dumb. So why should I support paying for more of the same?

One interesting development on the "gap" is that a private company -- SpaceX was awarded a fairly large contract to do some of the resupply work in the interim.

This is typical government movement. Or perhaps it is a reflection of the government the US has created and continues on via momentum, not vision. Yes, NASA, I know there's a vision statement somewhere, reinforced by Policy Statement X and Press Release Y & Z, but it's not VISION.

I recall years a ago Wired mag commented on the passing of an important time hallmark in space history; I believe it was space walking. It basically went unnoticed by the public, NASA had an invitation only event, and then hosted a bunch of committee meetings to round it out.

That gotta-be-a-member-of-the-club presence is NEVER going to go over with the generations necessary to really make interstellar travel possible. They know things are not working as is, so there's little incentive to join a losing proposition.
