There is some kind of cultural phenomenon going on too, I think. There's a certain hyper-egalitarianism in which we're so obsessed with equality (meaning sameness) that we can't stand to see anyone rise above the crowd. Also, there's nothing we love more than tearing down a successful person--although that might be related to celebs and sports figures, but even so, we like to see a fall from grace.
